Durango Silverton Train

Riding the train from Durango to Silverton

Durango to Silverton, Colorado

The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad steam engine train runs for 45 miles along the Animas River through the San Juan National Forest in Southwestern Colorado. It first ran between Durango and Silverton in 1882 and has continued for over 140 years.

The Durango and Silverton train is one of the most scenic train rides in the world. The route climbs over 3000 feet and features drop-offs of several hundred feet and rock walls within inches from the train car edges.

There are several river crossings across steel bridges, incredible views of massive Colorado peaks, and roaring rapids as you glide along tracks up through a valley.

The Highline is an amazing highlight of the ride, where the train tracks are laid precariously along a steep canyon wall with some sections almost straight drop to the river 200 feet below the tracks.

The steam engine locomotives are still steam powered however they are now fueled with oil and not coal due to risk of wildfires along the route during the high season.
